Studio Instructor, Interior Design Program
Innovative design solutions and design education are representative of Louis Raia’s more than 30 years of architectural and interior design experience. He has had leading design roles in major projects across the United States, as well as in the Middle East and Far East. His work includes buildings and interiors in the higher education, science and technology, workplace, healthcare, hospitality and aviation market sectors.
Currently Lou is a full-time design faculty member at Harrington College of Design and has a consulting design practice. Previously, he served the SmithGroup from 2005-2008 as Design Principal in the Chicago office and for three years led the design effort for major clients such as Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, and Optiver. He represented the Chicago office on various SmithGroup national corporate committees including the National Design Committee, the National Higher Ed Practice Group, and the National Sustainable Design Leadership Group.
Prior to that, he served as Associate Principal and Senior Project Designer at Perkins+Will. With that firm, he played a key role in building the 100-person Umm al Qura University project office, for which he served as Associate Director of Design. A talented, award-winning designer, Lou has had his work featured in major publications, has presented his work at international specialization design conferences, served as visiting design critic at major universities, and led important client presentations and design marketing pursuits. Lou has strong leadership and organizational skills that foster excellent client relationships. He has participated in national design innovation seminars and corporate strategic planning initiatives.
