Associate of Applied Science in Digital Photography
In addition to covering traditional components such as lighting, equipment and composition,
Harrington College of Design’s Associate of Applied Science in Digital Photography program challenges students to become fluent in the language of new media, including image manipulation, color management, output technologies and more.
In Harrington's associate-level Digital Photography degree program, the curriculum focuses on the digital imaging technology used for photographic production of images in the field of commercial photography. With access to industry-current equipment, studio facilities and computer labs throughout their studies, students can assemble a professional-style portfolio of representative work that can prepare them for entry-level employment in the commercial photography industry. Graduates will be expected to:
- Demonstrate the technical and aesthetic skills necessary for the creation of high quality, commercially oriented photographic images.
- Demonstrate proficiency with creation, capture and image-editing software to meet specific needs of a client.
- Display knowledge of professional DSLR, medium-format digital capture systems, as well as strobe and continuous lighting sources.
- Recognize and select the appropriate tools for the job based on end use of the project.
- Apply professional business, marketing skills and legal knowledge relevant in the field of commercial photography.
- Prepare an integrated business plan, with supporting marketing plan, materials and targeted portfolio to support the transition into the workforce.
Courses in Harrington's AAS in Digital Photography program focus on providing a unique and innovative technical education in the field of commercial photography. Classes are led by experienced professionals with the knowledge and experience to deliver thorough instruction in techniques, practical business principles and creative exploration.
- In History of Photography, students examine key historical photographers and the role that their images played in evolution of the media, from invention of the photographic process to the contemporary role of the image.
- In Commercial Photography, emphasis is on creativity, the enhancement of conceptual understanding and problem solving. Students should gain practical experience in fashion, still life and the use of people in conceptual corporate/advertising photography.
- In Imaging and Studio Practices, fundamentals of lighting and quality in digital imaging are taught. Studio assignments introduce students to the six qualities of light and the use and control of tungsten lighting. Creative control is stressed, and quality control is studied, practiced and emphasized.
