Does your design pack punch?
The truth is that your designs might not be as impactful as you hope them to be. As a Graphic Design student, you want your graphics to leave an impression on your viewers. And they can – as soon as you start focusing on the right elements. Start by emphasizing the three elements below:
Fine Arts instructor Dawn Pederson believes that unity is one of the most important aspects of graphic design. Without it, your graphic can feel incomplete and unfinished.
Focusing on unity in your graphics can support your brand and make a campaign more cohesive. Pederson encourages her Graphic Design students to “establish a look and attitude that is recognizable even before the content of the ad is read.”
This may seem difficult at first, but you can begin by studying ad campaigns by major corporations. Pederson suggests Target, but you can also consider companies such as Macy’s or H&M. Each company’s ad campaign is distinctive – if you’ve ever seen posters on the streets, online or seen commercials on television, you can usually guess which company the ad is for before you read the name.
By emphasizing unity, you can bring that kind of awareness to your graphics. At first glance, consumers can recognize the brand – and immediately decide how they feel about it, based on their pre-established relationship with the company.
Make sure that viewers of your graphics can understand and read any typography at first glance. Especially if you hope to work in advertisement, clarity is crucial to successful campaigns.
Frontend designer Ray Villalobos emphasizes clarity and contrast in his designs. He believes that the best way to create a clear graphic is to focus on simplicity. Remember to always edit your graphics. Take away anything that is unnecessary and focus on the essence of your design.
Villalobos notes that you can increase clarity by making sure typography contrasts with your background colors and any pictures you’ve included. Use variety in your design layouts and typography layouts. Make sure you focus on what really needs to be emphasized. He advises students that “trying to emphasize everything emphasizes nothing” in the end.
You can increase clarity and contrast by using complementary colors.
Color is also a great way to catch a viewer’s eye. Designers Marjorie Crum and Marcia Layton Turner note that “any kind of color adds impact and interest to objects and design. Brighter colors make elements of design seem larger, while cooler colors make them seem smaller.”
Understanding how colors work together and what you can do to convey particular messages can make your graphics more impactful – especially at first glance.
These three elements are immediately noticed by viewers. They work together to create your graphic’s first impression. Once you’ve mastered them, you can focus on working with the secondary elements of your design – to support these primary elements and make your graphics even more memorable.
