As we launch into a new year of interior design, graphic design and photography at Harrington, we wanted to take a moment to go through just a few of our favorite highlights from 2011 ...

China Trip

In May, a group of students from Harrington College of Design embarked on a trip of a lifetime- a trip that displayed the architectural, cultural and design treasures of China. Led by Harrington Interior Design Program Coordinator Demetra Vartzikos, the group visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven and Beijing, along with side trips to a jade factory, tea ceremony, kung fu show and even tai chi in the park! Students Show the Design World What They Do Best

Our students show the design world what they do best year after year in events, contests and competitions, and 2011 was no exception. Some highlights included:

Harrington students took attendees to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s 14th Annual Grand Chefs Gala and Jean Banchet Awards on a trip down the yellow brick road, donating their time and creativity to a beautiful Emerald City-inspired concept. The concept was complete with a life-size poppy field and Gates of Oz replica, while students created matching centerpiece decorations! (photo courtesy Demetra Vartzikos)

Our students competed in a fierce experimental design competition for charity, with interior design student Bridgette Nyman’s chair “Conversation over Coffee” taking first place. Bridgette’s stunning chair was showcased and auctioned off at Chicago Home+Garden Magazine's Chairs for Charity Auction Event (photo courtesy Peter Klick):

Harrington students teamed up to create the concept “Big Spender” for the 2011 STITCH charity event. Their concept was inspired by Chicago’s historic Carson Pirie Scott building (photo courtesy Demetra Vartzikos):

And the communication and graphic design department students donated their talent and time to creating numerous non-profit inspirational designs and graphic design identity work for local groups including RAILS and the Barrington Area Library.

Also during 2011, our college underwent several transformations! From changes within the interior of our college to the launch of our new website, we’re proud to continue growing into the new year!

As we remember the great events from 2011, we look forward to what our alumni, students and faculty accomplish in 2012. Here’s to a new year of outstanding design!
