Two Harrington College of Design students, Nicole Pancottine and Melody McLeod, were nominated to participate in this year’s IIDA NEOCON 2013 Student Design Charette. The randomly assigned teams were composed of students, all IIDA student members, from interior design programs the country to work on a design solution within a six hour time period. The design problem was to re-imagine the north lobby of the Merchandise Mart as an inviting area for informal meetings, Wi-Fi lounge and waiting space for visitors to the Mart. The teams were to use furniture and materials found at NEOCON. The student participation in the event doubled from last year and was a great opportunity for students to collaborate and network with each other.
Teams started working together at 9am, then presented to the judges in the afternoon and on Wednesday a fabulous reception was held for the participants at the DIRTT showroom, overlooking the Chicago River, to announce the winning teams.
Additionally, Harrington adjunct faculty member Tom Marquardt and his firm, marquardt +, helped plan and facilitate the design Charette with Monica DeAngelis, IIDA Manager of Student Member Relations and Activities. Monica is a graduate of Harrington College of Design’s undergraduate interior design program.
