For anyone with a small home, finding room for everything without creating a claustrophobic living environment can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to create more space around your home while also adding eye-pleasing elements to your rooms. These ideas may seem overly simple, but simplicity is precisely what makes them work:
- Magnetic Strips
For anyone who likes to cook and has a large amount of metal cooking supplies, placing a magnetic strip on a kitchen wall on which these supplies can hang can be an effective solution. Rather than take up your limited cabinet space, these magnets will hold your utensils at the ready while keeping them out of the way. This works especially well for knives, as they hang upright and flat, but make sure they’re well out of the reach of children. You’ll not only be able to showcase your knives and other utensils, but they’ll also look as if they’re floating in mid-air.
- Compartment Benches
Another limiting quality of a small home is the lack of seating options. To rectify this, try a bench with a compartment. Not only can it provide a place for guests to sit, but it also offers a storage area inside. This works especially well for anyone with a rather large shoe or blanket collection.
- Wicker Baskets
Sometimes there is no other option than leaving some items out in the open, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave a cluttered mess. If you have a bathroom without a medicine cabinet, storing items such as lotions and soaps in a small wicker basket creates a nice display while keeping what you need close at hand. Too many blankets or sheets? Place them in a large wicker basket rather than taking up valuable closet space. This keeps everything together and adds a homey feel to the space.
