Do-it-yourself projects can breathe new life into your favorite (if well-worn) furniture pieces. Below, Harrington College of Design Interior Design Instructor and Program Coordinator Peter Klick shares step-by-step instructions for a D-I-Y project he recently undertook to transform the old leather sofa and armchair shown below.
First of all, work outside if at all possible!
Step 1: Vacuum and clean the furniture well.
Step 2: Wearing gloves, wash the furniture with acetone solution to strip off any leather treatment coatings.
Step 3: Apply two coats of light gray primer, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next layer.
Step 4: Apply three light coats of paint. I used a colored leather dye called "Leatherkote," an environmentally safe product from Parasol Inc.
Step 5: Finish hard-to-reach places with a paint brush.
Check out the transformation of Peter's sofa and armchair from a worn brown to firecracker red in the photo at the top of the post.
If you undertake a project like this, be sure to email us some photos - we’d love to see how yours turns out!
