The New Hospitality Industry Network hosted it’s summer social at the IO Urban Roofscape at the Godfrey Hotel on July 24th, honoring three interior design students from Harrington with scholarships: Trish Albertini from the Master of Interior Design program, and Justin Brown and Jordan Pons from the Bachelors of Interior Design program.
A brief photo shoot with her fellow recipients and several Asian infused appetizers later, Jordan and I sat down for a chat to reflect on her experience as a first time scholarship winner. She explained that she entered the competition shortly after receiving an email from her department chair, Constantine Vasilios, encouraging students to take advantage of the upcoming scholarship opportunity. The process was relatively simple: obtain two letters of recommendation, one from a professor at school, the other from a work or outside source (in Jordan’s case this was supplied by her boss and mentor the last four years, Arturo Gomex, President of Rockit Ranch Productions) and complete a personal essay of why they felt deserving of a scholarship. In June she received formal word of her award.
Jordan currently interns at entertainment/hospitality group, Rockit Ranch, and has worked on five construction projects with them including Dragon Ranch (now “Bottlefork), Ay Chiwowa, and the Underground where she also works as a server. “It helps a lot not only studying design but also working in these venues to understand the function/operations end of it all. I can pull both design and function into the creative process which makes for a better venue in the end.”
Jordan hopes to work full time as a restaurant designer after graduation, and in the meantime plans to apply for as many scholarships as possible to assist with funding her education and building her resume, knowing how simply it can be and how satisfying the results!
