When chosen with care, paint colors can enhance the atmosphere of every room in the house. 

Kitchen: For many families, the kitchen is a meeting place where conversations are enjoyed and meals are shared, so creating a welcoming atmosphere that promotes socializing and stimulates appetites is important. Blues, purples and greens tend to curb hunger, whereas red and orange can stimulate hunger. Shades of yellow can activate metabolism and boost thinking. Brown also evokes a homey, warm feeling. These colors can coordinate well with cabinetry to provide a modern counterbalance to stark stainless steel appliances.

Dining room: Rich, bold colors and earth tones are good choices for the dining room because they create feelings of warmth and aid digestion. If the kitchen is used for food preparation, and the dining room is where family and friends enjoy meals, then colors including red, orange and brown used in the kitchen are also suitable in the dining room.

Living room: Red is an unlikely choice for a living room because it may be too stimulating and can even raise blood pressure. A living room can be made warm and welcoming when lighter shades of yellow and brown are selected, including beige, sand and cream. Darker colors like maroon and burgundy make a room feel rich and inviting, and medium brown can be used with brighter colors for accents, including orange, pink, light blue and yellow. Green shades such as sage or olive create a peaceful, refreshing and tranquil living space. Green is said to promote healing, help reduce stress and restore equilibrium. Gray can also be used effectively, but care should be taken to avoid heavy use or the wrong tones because these can appear dismal and depressing.

Bathroom: Creating a restful sanctuary in the bathroom that promotes feelings of purity, cleanness and sophistication can be accomplished with the use of clear neutrals including white, beige and gray with accents of other colors. Spa-inspired ocean tones like pale blue and sea foam green can be calming, but be careful when choosing shades of green and yellow because these can be unflattering. Soft tan, light pink and mauve will create a healthy glow for most skin tones.

Home office or study: Blue is a great color choice for a home office or study because it creates a soothing, relaxed and comfortable setting. Blue also helps maintain concentration, lowers your heart rate and boosts productivity.

Bedroom: Intense colors like red can lead to headaches, and orange can cause sleep disturbances. Yellow is also stimulating, making these energizing colors unlikely choices for the bedroom. Blues and greens with warm undertones can be used to create a soothing and relaxing sleep environment. Lilac is a good choice for feminine bedrooms; it coordinates well with silver and black accents. Lighter shades of pink are also suitable for girls' rooms because pink is warm and soothing, and can create a calming effect. Shades of deeper purple, violet and mauve may be chosen for a more mature look.

Taking into account the correlation between colors and moods can be very helpful in choosing a color palette and making decor choices for each room in the house. When the purpose of each room is considered and the psychological impact of color is taken into account, great color choices can be made to create a welcoming home.
